Princess Salome is smitten with the prophet Iokanaan, who rejects her. King Herod, who lusts after her, promises her anything she wants if she’ll dance for him. She does, and then demands Iokanaan’s head on a silver platter. Strauss' powerful score and Oscar Wilde's unabashedly florid prose combine to deliver a fascinating tale of raw sensuality and decadence, loosely based on a biblical story, as shocking today as it was when it was premiered in Dresden over a century ago.
